“Why do some pitchers get hurt and others do not?”
Pitchers are getting injured more often every year. This is not limited to professional baseball as now more than half of Tommy John surgeries are being performed on teenagers. The DVS team is obsessed with this problem.
It all starts with evaluating a pitcher's mechanical efficiency. Inefficiencies can lead to injury and also impacts performance. There are a lot of opinions regarding mechanics. We have taken the opinions out of it with the development of a data driven Injury Risk Model which combines a bio-mechanical scoring system of a pitcher’s delivery with a statistical model that determines injury risk and optimal performance value.

The DVS IR Model
Our analytics team has developed an Injury Risk (IR) model that reliably predicts the likelihood of a future upper-extremity injury for a given pitcher. The IR model combines our proprietary DVS score along with biographical data, usage data, injury history and more. The training set for the model continues to grow with over 1,000 pitchers from today all the back to the 1950s. This work has been published in Orthopedics Medical Journal and was co-authored with medical staff of a MLB team.
The accuracy of the probability of the IR model to predict injury is very good and gets even better with more innings pitched. The DVS Analytics team continues to examine this subject and is exploring relationships between DVS score metadata and injury type, performance and more.
MLB Solutions
Our Injury Risk Model is a player personnel tool that leverages our IR model to evaluate pitchers for performance, potential and injury risk. Increase the time your pitching staff spends on the mound by leveraging this tool in your decision making.
We also offer services to conduct a thorough DVS and injury risk evaluation of your team or organization’s pitching staff as well as analysis of other players of interest, i.e. free agents, trade targets, draft prospects, etc. Contact us to learn more.
